Shailputri Mata – Navratri First Day
Shailputri is the first among the 9 forms of Goddess Durga who are worshiped throughout the 9 days of Navratri festival. Each day of this festival is dedicated to the one form of Durga and first day is dedicated to Maa Shailputri.
About Shailputri
Mata Shailputri looks like this:

Shailaputri is a Sanskrit name, which means – the daughter of the mountain (Shaila = Mountain, Putri = Daughter). As the legend goes, Maa Durga had taken birth in the home of the Parvat Raj Himalaya (King of the Himalayas). Hence, this incarnation of hers got the name Shailputri. The name of the King of the Himalayas was Hemavan. Hence, she also got the name Hemavati.
In her previous birth, she was the consort of Shiva and daughter of Daksha. So, she also has names like Sati, Bhavani. Once, Daksha organized a big Yajna event. He didn’t invite Shiva. But, Sati couldn’t resist it and she arrived there. During the Yajna, Daksha insulted Shiva. She could not take it and jumped into the fire of Yajna. Later, she took birth in the home of Mountain Lord as Parvati (also Hemavati) and married Lord Shiva again.
As she rides on the bull, she is also known as Vrisharudha. It is a Sanskrit term made of 2 words: Vrisha = bull and Arudha = to be placed upon.

Maa Brahmacharini - 2nd Day of Navratri
Maa brahmacharini
On the second day of Navratri, Goddess Brahmacharini is worshipped. Brahmacharini name means the one who practices penance, with Brahma meaning penance and Charini meaning a female follower. She is also known as Tapaswini, Tapasayacharini or Parvati. She holds a rosary in her right hand and a water utensil in her left hand. Her devotees are rewarded with virtue, peace, compassion, happiness, prosperity, and nobility.
MAA CHANDRAGHANTA- THIRD DAY OF NAVRATRI
Maa Chandraghanta is the third manifestation of Devi Durga and is worshipped on the 3rd of Navratri. Since she has a Chandra or half moon, in the shape of a Ghanta (bell), on her forehead, she is addressed as Chandraghanta. A symbol of peace, serenity and prosperity, Maa Chandraghanta has three eyes and ten hands holding ten types of swords, weapons and arrows. She establishes justice and gives Her devotees the courage and strength to fight challenges.
Her appearance may be of a source of power which is always busy killing and suppressing the bad and wicked. However, for her devotees, Maa is serene, gentle and peaceful. By worshipping Maa Chandraghanta, you will open the doors to great respect, fame and glory. Maa also helps you attain spiritual enlightenment. Her idol, which symbolises both beauty and bravery, gives you the strength the keep the negative energy away and repels all the troubles from your life.
You need to follow simple rituals to worship Goddess Chandraghanta. You should first worship all the Gods, Goddesses and Planets in the Kalash and then offer prayer to Lord Ganesha and Kartikeya and Goddess Saraswati, Lakshmi, Vijaya, Jaya - the family members of Goddess Durga. The pooja should be concluded by worshipping Goddess Chandraghanta followed by a heartfelt prayer to Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma.

Fourth day of Navaratri: Maa Kushmanda
Kushmanda, the fourth manifestation of Goddess Durga, is worshipped on the Navratri Chaturthi. She is considered to be the creator of the universe. Her name comprises of “Ku-shm-anda” meaning “the cosmic egg.” The fourth day of Navratri also marks the beginning of worshipping MahaLaxmi. Legend says that Lord Vishnu was able to start the creation of the universe when Devi Kushmanda smiled and moved away. She created the whole universe when there was no existence of any creation and there was eternal darkness in every direction. She signifies that form of Durga, which is the source of all. Devi Kushmanda is also known as “Ashtabhuja” as she is often depicted holding weapons, rosary etc in her eight. In her seven hands she holds kamandalu, bow, arrow, a jar of nectar, discus, mace and a lotus. In her eighth hand she holds a rosary which blesses her devotees with the Astasiddhi (8 types of studies or Wisdom sources) and Navniddhis( 8 types of wealth). She sits or rides a lion who personifies “Dharma”. Her hand holding nectar of jar provides her devotees with long life and good health.
The Goddess Kushmanda should be worshipped by Chanting the followed Mantra:
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु माँ कुष्मांडा रूपेण संस्थिता।

Fifth day of navratri: Maa skandamata
The 5th day of Navratri is dedicated to Goddess Skandamata, the 5th manifestation of Goddess Durga and the mother of Lord Kartikeya, who was chosen by the devatas as their commander in chief in the war against the demons. The image of Devi Skandamata portrays Her holding Lord Skanda in his infant form and a lotus in her right hand. She has four arms, three eyes and a bright complexion. She is also called as Padmasani since She is often depicted seated on a lotus flower in a her idol. She is also worshiped in the form of Parvati, Maheshwari or Mata Gauri. The left arm of the goddess is in a pose to grant boons with grace to her devotees.
The legend says that Tarkasur, a great demon, once pleased Lord Brahma with his great devotion and extremely tough penance. He asked Lord Brahma to shower His blessings and make him immortal. Lord Brahma denied him this blessing, saying none can escape death. Tarkasur acted smart and asked for the death by the son of Lord Shiva, since he thought Lord Shiva would never get married. Tarkasur started tormenting the people on the earth. Fearing his strength would cause destructions, the devatas requested Lord Shiva to get married. He agreed and married Goddess Parvati. Their child, Lord Kartikeya/ Skanadmata Kumar, demolished Tarkasur. Devi Skandamata is a symbol of the mother-son relationship.
By worshipping Her, you get immense love and affection from her and gets all his desires fulfilled. You may attain supreme joy even in this very mortal world. Her worship automatically includes the worship of Lord Kartikeya (in his child form)

Sixth day of navratri : Maa katyayani
On the sixth day of navratri Goddess Katyayani is worshipped all over the world. Devi Katyayani is the sixth manifestation among Navdurga. According to Hindu mythology, there was a sage named Katyayana who had a wish that Goddess Durga take the birth as his daughter at his home so he performed the hard penance to please the God. After years of hard penance, God accepted his wish and Goddess Durga was born to sage Katyayana’s Home on Dakshin Krishna Chaturdashi that is why she is known by the name of Katyayani in all over the world. To protect the Devas, Devi Katyayani leads the war from the side of the Gods. When demon Mahishasura crossed all the limits then she killed the demon Mahishasura and freed all the Gods from the torment of Asuras. Goddess Katyayani is one of the violent Devi in the nine goddess of navratri.
Seventh day of navratri : Maa kalratri
As the navratri festivities reach to seventh day of navratri pooja, devotees soak into religious activities and in goddess’s Bhakti. Goddess Kalratri is worshipped on the seventh day of Navratri pooja who is the seventh incarnation of Goddess Durga among Navdurga. It is believed that she is the most violent goddess among nine goddess of navratri. She kills the Asuras and demons before the blink of eye. Devotees should not scare with her appearance as she blesses devotees with power and renowned status and protect them with all bad evils. She is known with the other names “Shubhankari” and “Kali Maa”.
According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Durga has to come into her most dreadful Swaroop - Devi Kalratri, to destroy cruel demon Raktabeej. There was no one in the Gods army who could kill Raktabeej because one drop of his scattered blood was able to create another embodiment of Raktabeej. Goddess Durga has to come into Kalratri avatar to kill him. She kept a Patra (vessel) to keep and assimilate whole blood of Raktabeej so that no more Raktabeej come into existence for fight. Her extreme vicious appearance while annihilating Raktabeej and other demons is immensely frightened. At the same time she is caring and loving goddess among them.

Eighth day of Navratri: Dedicated to Goddess Gauri
The eight manifestation of Goddess Durga is Maha Gauri, worshipped on the eighth day of Navaratri. Maha Gauri is a manifestation is of Goddess Parvati. When Parvati observed a hard sacrament to obtain Lord Shiva in the forest of Himalayas, she developed a dark complexion. When Lord Shiva accepted her great devotion, he washed the body of Parvati with water of “pure Gange”s or “Ganga” and her body regained its beauty. She came to be recognized as “Maha Gauri”, meaning “extremely white” and became prominent as the consort of Mahadev(Lord Shiva). Devi Gauri is bright, peaceful and calm and her beauty glows like sparkling White Pearl. She is depicted sitting on a bull (Vrishabha) and has four arms. Her right hand is in the pose of alleviating fear and her right lower hand holds a trident. She holds a ‘damaru’ (a small drum) in her right hand while the lower one grants boons to her devotees. Elucidation of her grace is infinite. Maha Gauri is the true Goddess of kindness and morality.
MahaGauri should be worshipped with the chant of following Mantra:
Ninth day of navratri : Maa siddhidatriया देवी सर्वभूतेषु माँ गौरी रूपेण संस्थिता।नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नम:।।
The last among the nine Avtar of Maa Durga, Maa Siddhidatri, is worshipped on the 9th day of Navaratri. Maa Siddhidatri grants Her devotees all sorts of achievements and is capable of giving all sorts of occult powers. She is the possessor of 26 different wishes (Siddhis) which She grants Her worshipers. The legend has it that the Lord Shiva got all those Siddhis by worshipping Maa Shakti. With Her gratitude the half body of Lord Shiva became that of Maa Shakti, and therefore he was called as Ardhanarishvar.
This Avtar of Maa Durga removes ignorance and provides knowledge to Her devotees. She is also worshipped by Deva, Gandharva, Asura, Yaksha and Siddha. Maa sits on Kamal (Lotus) and rides on the lion. She has four hands and holds a Gada in the lower right hand, a Chakra in the upper right hand, a lotus flower in the lower left hand and a Shankha in the upper left hand.
Her glory and power are infinite and worshipping Maa Siddhidatri on the final day (the ninth day) of Navaratri bestows all Siddhis to Her devotees and also marks the successful completion of the Navaratri festival.
